Semitruck driver killed, 4 people injured in I-75 crash Thursday morning

The semitruck driver, a 47-year-old man from Belleville, lost control for "unknown reasons" and crossed the center median, striking three vehicles, authorities said.

MONROE COUNTY, Mich. — A semitruck driver is dead and three people were injured in a crash on I-75 in LaSalle Township Thursday morning.

Monroe County dispatch received several calls regarding a crash around 4:18 a.m. Thursday, according to a news release from the Michigan State Police Monroe Post. Reports indicated multiple vehicles were involved and that one had caught fire.

The crash involved a semitruck and three vehicles on I-75 just north of South Otter Creek Road. An early investigation determined the driver of a semitruck traveling southbound on I-75 lost control of the vehicle for what state police described as "unknown reasons."

The semitruck struck cement barricades on the right side, crossed over the freeway and hit the median barricades on the left side before breaking through the center barrier wall. It then entered the northbound lanes and struck three vehicles.

Two people inside one of the vehicles suffered minor injuries and took themselves to the hospital, state police said. The drivers of the other two vehicles also suffered minor injuries, but refused transportation to the hospital.

The driver of the semitruck, identified only as a 47-year-old man from Belleville, died at the scene.

The area is under construction, however MSP said no workers were in the area at the time of the incident.
