TOLEDO, Ohio — Dan Cummins' face is familiar as the Emmy Award-winning WTOL 11 former sports director and is now seen daily on WTOL 11 News at Four and Fox 36 News at 10.
Dan was born and raised in Central Illinois and attended Illinois State University, where he earned a degree in mass communication. His first job was at the local ABC affiliate in 1976, where he worked as a news photographer. After moving up to sports anchoring a short time later, he moved to Toledo in 1980 to work at WTOL 11.
Among his favorite events to cover were the 1984 World Series where the Tigers won the championship, the 1977 Heisman Trophy ceremony in New York with Charles Woodson and the 2003 college football championship when Ohio State beat Miami in Tempe, Arizona.
By 2018, Dan made the transition out of sports to begin news anchoring and cover stories and events that reflected his interests like military veterans and farming. Flag City Honor Flight’s mission to Washington, D.C., in November 2024 will be his 18th overall.
In 2024, Dan was honored as Civilian of the Year by Task Force 20, a veterans organization that helps PTSD victims. Dan works closely with HOOVES, another veteran-based facility that helps others through equine therapy. In 2012, Dan was inducted into the Toledo City League Athletic Hall of Fame. In 2014, he was honored as a “Distinguished Alumni from ISU.”
Dan and his wife Barb have seven children between them. They enjoy seven grandchildren.
