PUT-IN-BAY, Ohio — The Lake Erie Islands Nature and Wildlife Center announced Wednesday the first-ever Monarch Fest that will be held in Put-in-Bay.
The event will be held on Saturday, Sept. 14 from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m. at Duggan's Field located next to the South Bass Island Lighthouse.
The festival features family-friendly activities, games, food, music and butterfly races for kids. Festival-goers will also be able to help LEINWC in its efforts to tag Monarchs with provided nets that families can use to catch butterflies.
Lake Erie Islands Nature and Wildlife Center said this is part of a large Monarch tagging research effort spanning from Canada to Mexico and contributes to conservation efforts. The center said Monarch butterflies migrate up to 3,000 miles every year across North America to Mexico for the winter.
"With the large-scale decline of pollinators across the United States, it is important to track these beautiful butterflies to keep population estimates up to date and understand their migratory pathways, which helps inform conservation efforts," LEINWC said.
