PORT CLINTON, Ohio — It may not look like much yet, but this plot of land in Port Clinton will soon be a fully-functional ice rink, thanks to the work of Port Clinton Fraternal Order of Police (FOP) Lodge 79.

FOP members have been talking about putting together a winter project for people in the community to use for a while now, according to Det. Ron Timmons.

"This is a chance for us to do something for the community," explains Timmons.

As of Dec. 19, the future ice rink is just a few boards spanning 60 ft. x 120 ft. Given a week of below-freezing temperatures, a special tarp and some water, the site near the bottom of the sledding hill at Portage Park will be open for skating.

While the official opening date depends on the weather, the FOP posted the following on its Facebook page, "We will be planning a fun event to officially announce the opening of the rink and will be sharing more details once the rink is finished. So until then you might want to add ice skates to your Christmas list!"

Timmons says the money for the project came from FOP dues and material donations from Carter Lumber.
