Several stars in 'The Shawshank Redemption' returning to Ohio for movie’s 30th anniversary

The event kicked off on Aug. 8 with a drive-in movie-style screening of “The Shawshank Redemption” in the historic Renaissance Theatre’s back lot.

COLUMBUS, Ohio — “The Shawshank Redemption” is celebrating its 30th anniversary this weekend.

The 1994 film is listed as the No. 1 movie of all time on IMDb. Among the actors in the movie are Morgan Freeman, Tim Robbins, Clancy Brown, Bob Gunton and William Sadler. 

In honor of its anniversary, several of the actors will return to Ohio where some of the movie's most notable scenes were filmed. These spots include the Mansfield Reformatory and Malabar Farm in Richland County.

During the weekend celebrations, visitors can go on tours, meet some cast members and visit all 15 filming sites along The Shawshank Trail.

Event details

The event kicked off on Aug. 8 with a drive-in movie-style screening of “The Shawshank Redemption” in the historic Renaissance Theatre’s back lot. Additional screenings with reserved seats inside the theater are set for Friday at 6:30 p.m. and Saturday at 12:30 p.m.

A 30th anniversary cast discussion is set for Aug. 9 from 4-5:30 p.m., led by Mankiewicz and featuring Director/Writer Frank Darabont, along with key players. After that, there will be a behind the scenes & beyond panel on Aug. 9, 10-11 a.m., which features Shawshank Location Manager Kokayi Ampah who will offer a unique opportunity to go behind the scenes and learn how sites in and around Mansfield were carefully selected to become the iconic locations that brought the film to life.

On Aug. 10 from 10-11 a.m. and Aug. 11 from 9-10 a.m., a background actors panel will take place where some of the actors in “The Shawshank Redemption” talk through their experiences. 

Guests will also be able to take themselves on a self-guided tour through several of the movie filming spots. You can view the trail map here.
