Local 12 hosts Trunk-or-Treat for families amid strike

Sunday marks day 31 of the UAW strike. Local 12 still held its annual Halloween event.

TOLEDO, Ohio — UAW Local 12 hosted its annual trunk-or-treat at its headquarters on Ashland Ave. on Sunday. Hundreds of UAW families and some from the neighborhood showed up for the fun event.

Organizers said the attendance was even bigger this year despite the Local 12 workers being on strike.

"We're staying positive. We're not letting the hardships of this strike beat us down," said Megan Fagan, an event organizer at Local 12.

It's a month into the UAW Strike against the Big Three, and Local 12 has been a part of it since day one. However, on Sunday, strikers stepped away from the picket line and took some time to focus on family.

"You get the chance to see what's most important, especially during this time where you're not working," said Damion Flunder, who has been with Local 12 for 10 years. "You look at the things you missed out on. Some of these moments you don't get back. Ya know. So you just take advantage of it as you have it. Every smile counts."

The line of trunk-or-treaters was filled with costumed kids, and costumed dogs, lots of smiles, lots of waves, and lots of decorated trunks.

"This right here is exactly why we're out fighting and what we're fighting for," said striker Mike Mondragon. "We would like to be able to do as best as we can for our families, and you can see right now this is something that we love doing. You can see how happy everybody is out here."
