US Department of Energy investing in auto manufacturing facilities in 8 states including Ohio

The conversion will help 345 United Auto Workers keep their current jobs and create 38 new labor jobs.

TOLEDO, Ohio — The U.S. Department of Energy is investing in auto manufacturing facilities in eight states, including Ohio.

This impacts Mobis, a plant inside the Stellantis Toledo Assembly Complex that will be getting more than $32 million to convert the plant into electric vehicles.

This conversion plant will support the manufacture of the Jeep Gladiator Plug-In Electric Hybrid Vehicle.

The conversion will also help 345 United Auto Workers keep their current jobs, create an estimated 38 new union labor jobs and create 185 new jobs at the new Mobis North America battery system assembly plant.

Toledo receives almost 2% of the $1.7 billion invested across the eight states, but this investment keeps jobs at Mobis and in Glass City.

U.S. Rep. Marcy Kaptur, D-Toledo, released a statement about the money invested in the community and why keeping the jobs in northwest Ohio is essential.

"This DOE award of over $32 million is an investment in the green economy and the working people who will keep the automotive heart of our Nation beating strongly in Northwest Ohio," Kaptur said in the statement. "Today, we further the creation of hundreds of good-paying jobs while safeguarding hundreds more, including those of 354 members of the United Auto Workers."

The total project costs a little over $65 million.
