The importance of prepping your vehicle for winter months

With holiday travel ahead and winter weather already rearing its head, here's what you need to do to maintain your vehicle.

PERRYSBURG, Ohio — The chilly temperatures are not just a sign that winter is near. Experts at AAA said it's a warning to start preparing your vehicle for inclement weather.

Drivers are urged not to put off car maintenance, especially amid holiday travel, when many will be on the roads during winter weather.

AAA General Manager in Perrysburg, Matthew Keber, said there is a simple maintenance check list that all drivers should go through. Keber said drivers should start by checking their tire pressure and making sure their tread is in good condition. They should also have their batteries and fluids checked.

And for the snowy months, visibility is crucial. Keber said drivers should make sure they have a good pair of wiper blades, and their headlights are working, so they can see and be seen.

Drivers should do these things to keep your vehicle prepared ahead of the winter months.

"Stop neglecting your car," said Keber. "Just make sure you pay attention if something doesn't feel right, if something doesn't sound right. There's a good chance that it may not be right. Find a reputable, trusted, mechanic or service garage or something that you trust to look into those things and address them before they become a big issue."

AAA said drivers should also ask themselves if they have everything they might need if they get stranded in the snow.

"You really should have some sort of emergency preparedness kit in your car. Some sort of a flashing device, a way to make sure that you can charge your cell phone, or have you cell phone fully charged because we do see slippery conditions and car slide off the road," Keber said. "You could get stuck. You want to make sure you have a way to be able to contact someone to come help you and to make sure that you're able to be seen if you do slide off the road."

AAA offers free courtesy inspections, and they encourage you to come in sooner rather than later.
