Big Brothers Big Sisters’ Angel Tree program helps make sure all Lucas County kids have a happy holiday

Big Brothers Big Sisters of Northwest Ohio are utilizing a number of ways to help Lucas County families get through the holidays with everything they need.

TOLEDO, Ohio — High inflation and prices are taking a toll on families this holiday season. So, as part of the season of giving this holiday, local non-profits like Big Brothers Big Sisters of Northwest Ohio, are making sure area children and families who are in need, are getting much needed financial assistance for the holidays.

According to the U.S. Census data, there are more than 426,000 residents in Lucas County.

Many of those are kids whose families are struggling.

Big Brothers Big Sisters of Northwest Ohio Chief Executive Director, Dr. Marvin Whitfield said they wanted to do more than offer mentorship to children in the area who are signed up with them this year.

"It's a lot of kids in need. Also, all the kids we service are at poverty level or just below it. There's a bunch of needs and I don't think there's enough programs out there," said Whitfield.

He added his organization went a step further, by not only helping their kids with mentors, but those still waiting for one.

"Most programs, you're only allowed to service the kids in the program. But, Big Brother Big Sisters, we actually service those on our waiting list also, and that costs us $1,800 a year," said Whitfield.

Thus this holiday season Big Brothers Big Sisters is looking not only to help kids who need it, but also be helped by those in the community who are in a position to do so.

They are asking for those who are interested to become mentors or volunteer time. They are also asking people in the community to donate money or needed gifts to their Angel Trees.

Even though helping families is not cheap, Whitfield said it's worth it to make sure families are getting help for the holidays. Therefore, families connected to the organization got food assistance, as well as, gift cards to go shopping for gifts for the entire family.

"The smiles on their faces while they're picking toys out. We even give small gift cards, so the children can shop. To just watch them smile and the pride where they can buy their own gifts. They can wrap the gift and place it under the tree," said Whitfield.

He added how he loved how usually, the kids want buy things for their siblings or parents, before they even think of getting anything for themselves. The beauty of giving, it seems, can start very young.
