Findlay woman turns her grief into motivation to honor her son's memory and help other moms

Chrissy Browne created 'Justin's Box' as a way to honor the son she lost at 9 months old. In less than three months, she has helped nearly 40 families in need.

FINDLAY, Ohio — Chrissy Browne experienced unimaginable heartbreak nearly 24 years ago when her 9-month-old son Justin contracted Respiratory Syncytial Virus and later passed away.

Although his death happened in 2001, like almost every mother, Chrissy Browne still aches for her lost child.

This year, Justin would have been 24 years old and since Chrissy Browne said she never wants her son forgotten, she created a positive memory through a good deed, where everyone benefits through Justin's Box.

"Justin will forever live in my heart. He is constantly with me," Chrissy Browne said. "Now I am able to wrap my head around a lot of it that's happened over the years, there's no better way to bring him to the light."

Through Justin's Box, the one-woman charity gives expectant mothers at least 6 months pregnant, or mothers of newborns a box filled with more than 50 pieces of baby items for their bundle of joy.

"There's like at least 20 onesies in there. Five to seven outfits. There's at least 15 sleepers. There's socks," Chrissy Browne said. "I have a friend through the (Facebook page) comments, she makes me baby blankets. She also crochets baby hats."

Having started Justin's Box less than three months ago, Chrissy Browne said her house has been taken over by baby items. She said her husband, Scott Browne, used to have an office. But, that has since become her storage room.

She jokingly blamed him for it, since he told her to get a hobby.

"He did it," Chrissy Browne said.

"If it makes her happy, ultimately, it makes me happy by making her happy," Scott Browne said.

"And then it makes all the mommies happy," Chrissy Browne said.

So far Chrissy Browne said she's been able to help nearly 40 families in need and looks forward to helping more. She hand delivers the boxes and said she sometimes gets to hold the babies.

"I feel like I'm a grandma to everybody which is kind of cool," Chrissy Browne said. "I get excited when everybody's like, 'oh, I need this' I'm like, 'oh let me make that box.'"

In addition to the box, which she also gift wraps, a handwritten thank you note is attached for mom as well. Chrissy Browne said this is a gift to both mother and child.

"I just want the moms to know that they're not alone and I can help them through it. I'm thankful for them to have the courage to go out and ask for help," Chrissy Browne said. "When I was younger, I've been through that same situation where I needed the help and I got the help. You know, it felt good."

Browne said she needs more diapers, shampoo, brushes and combs, wipes and anything else needed for new moms.
