Pemberville woman crochets for a cause after family hardship

Denise Adams is raffling off her homemade hats to raise money for the Ronald McDonald House Charities, a cause close to her heart.

PEMBERVILLE, Ohio — Crocheting has become more than a hobby this holiday season for Denise Adams, an assistant librarian at the Pemberville Library. It’s now a way to give back after her family faced one of their most challenging times.

Adams is raffling off her handmade Christmas-themed crochet creations at the library, with every dollar raised going to support the Ronald McDonald House Charities.

"Didn't know what I was going to do with them," Adams said about her crocheted hats. "But then my daughter had an incident where her newborn son had to be transported from Bay Park to Toledo NICU."

During the difficult period, the Ronald McDonald House provided her daughter with a room, meals and emotional support.

"They did everything they could to help them kind of get through it," Adams said.

Some of Adams’ crochet creations were inspired by reindeer, Frosty the Snowman and a Christmas tree. All ten of the hats are now on display at the Pemberville Library on Front Street.

"I just enjoy crocheting and got a little wacko with these," Adams said.

The raffle will take place on Dec. 19, with $1 tickets available for purchase at the library.

Participants can choose which hat they hope to win by dropping their ticket into the corresponding container.

"This way, my creativity and my hands have created something that I can share and hopefully help a good cause," Adams said.

While her grandson has since recovered, Adams is happy to use her talent to support other families navigating difficult times.
