PEMBERVILLE, Ohio — People from Pemberville are particular about the Christmas stalk heralding the season on the lonely edge of a corn field on Kohring Rd.
And they really want you to know, it’s not a weed. It’s a stalk.
The confusion comes perhaps from the world’s most famous Christmas weed which captured the public’s imagination in 2019 in Toledo, a half hour north of Pemberville.
The Pemberville weed (err… stalk) first came to the public’s attention on social media when a photograph of the spindly tree stand-in quietly made it’s appearance.
To make the stalk even more pathetic (which believe it or not is a positive when it comes to the world of holiday themed detritus), the stalk is actually just a dried out collection of corn husks affixed to a cheap green metal fence post.
When WTOL 11 visited, a local fan gave her own report on the newly famous farm field decoration.
"We in Pemberville have the spirit. If you would notice the corn stalk. It's not a weed! The girl talking to me says it's a weed. I'm like 'Honey, that's a corn stalk'. Anyway, if you will notice it has been decorated with Christmas cheer. It even has a star topper, bulbs, a solar light, a tree skirt, and a red bow. So we in Pemberville do have the community holiday spirit. Thank you for tuning in to channel WTOL 11 on Kohring Road, Pemberville, Ohio," said Terry Long.
Time will tell if the Pemberville stalk will go down in history like it’s famous cousin to the north.
Either way, the people of Pemberville sure are enjoying it.
