Stitch and Pitch | Knitters, crocheters come out to root on Mud Hens, help homeless

This is the second year in a row for the event, in which crafters make items for the organization Bags of Love while also taking in a ball game.

TOLEDO, Ohio — Nothing goes together better than baseball and knitting… maybe. A group of crafters at Fifth Third Field in Toledo certainly would make the argument however.

This was the second year for the Stitch and Pitch event at the ballpark.

Dozens of knitters and crocheters who showed up at the game worked on their own projects and also made soap sacks which double as washcloths. The items were eventually donated to the nonprofit organization, Bags of Love, which helps the homeless.

Angel Myers, who is the co-founder of Bags of Love 419, says Sunday’s event helped fill a need.

"Everybody needs to feel clean. If someone is trying to improve their life and they're in a shelter or living on the street, and they're trying to get a leg up and they're trying to look for work, they have to be clean to do so," said Myers.

Groups of knitters were peppered around the stadium for the event, often with their attention more focused on their projects or their friends than the game.

Laura Regan, owner of Created 4 U by Laura, helped organize the event.

She says this kind of event is done all over the world but the effects are local.

“It’s great that we’re giving back to Toledo. It’s not like we are shipping these somewhere else, they’re going right back into the community here,” said Regan.

The organization also creates re-usable drawstring bags for those in need and collects and distributes items for people in need.
