Modern day traveler explores the country with her horse

In the last three years, Elaine has traveled to 35 states and localities, all with her horse 'Chuck' by her side.

OHIO, USA — We often think of traveling being reserved only for vacations, but one woman has turned it into her entire life.

For three years, Elaine Sherer has been traveling across the country with her horse, Chuck. Since the middle of the pandemic, they have been living their lives out of a trailer while seeing all that America has to offer.

Elaine said in her normal life, she's a hardcore career woman. But she's taking a break and a major sabbatical to live life and smell the roses.

"I've been living on the road with my horse for three years now," said Elaine Sherer, modern day traveler.

Elaine has been traveling all her life. Born in Germany, she moved to the United States during her high school years back in 1986. After 35 years of living and working as a Real Estate agent in Fort Myers Florida, she decided to start a new journey of living as a Nomad.

"I actually travel with my horse full-time. I'm constantly traveling with him, seeing new places," Elaine said.

She and her 16 year old horse Chuck take trail rides in each new state she travels to. The two of them trail ride between 1,500 to 3,000 miles per year.

She explained that the journey started because she wanted to enjoy the total freedom of being able to travel from place to place.

"It's the ultimate freedom to just go where you want, when you want, and explore places, meet people, meet new cultures, new foods, sights and sounds. It's just very freeing," Elaine said.

According to Elaine, she is paying her way for her travels across the country with her own savings. In the last three years, she has traveled to 35 states and localities, including Michigan, Oregon, California and the Gulf of Mexico.

"Really getting the flavor of different places - so my favorite traveling style is to only go an hour and a half to three hours between places," Elaine explained.

She has camped and gone traveling with horses for many years beginning in her early 20's. But in September 2021, she sold her farm in Fort Myers, which set the stage for her to begin the explorer lifestyle.

"I just decided to make it a full-time thing here in the last three years. It actually took a year to get ready to have everything sold and everything ready to actually be able to live the nomad lifestyle," Elaine said.

She says everybody has been very welcoming to her all over the country.

"Everyone's just been so wonderful and welcoming. I didn't know a soul when I started these travels, and now I have a rich tapestry of friends all over the country," Elaine said.

Now, her journey continues to Hocking Hills.

Elaine told WTOL 11 she is also taking flying lessons, as well.
