PERRYSBURG, Ohio — Halloween came early this year for residents of a nursing and assisted living facility in Perrysburg.
The Manor in Perrysburg held its annual trick-or-treating event on Wednesday. While it has candy and costumes, it more importantly serves as a way to have fun with family.
"Family is everything here," said resident Ben Covington. "Some do (spend time), some don't. A lot are more fortunate than others, but they try to get everybody up to participate."
Days like the trick-or-treating event, filled with activities and people buzzing around, put a smile on his face.
It's just good for everybody here," Covington said. "It means everything. Without the family's support, it's sad."
Covington and many of his neighbors at the facility were surrounded by loved ones as kids and families got to walk the halls, talk to residents and fill their candy stash.
It's something his daughter, Jacquelyn, said she cherishes.
"A lot of people miss out on certain experiences with their family members and I know when a lot of people come to homes like this, they don't really get to visit or some people choose not to visit. It just means a lot I can come anytime to see my dad," Jacquelyn said.
For Covington, candy isn't the best treat on Halloween, it's spending time with family.
"I love it. I love to see the kids glow and light up and get their candy and the 'thank you's' and the trick or treats and it just makes me feel good and I know the other residents feel good," he said. "That joyfulness, that feeling of joy and acceptance and feeling like you're loved again."
