TOLEDO, Ohio — Imagine 15 years without property taxes.
That is the housing opportunity Eagle Creek Builders are working with the city of Toledo to provide for people 55 and up at the Heather Cove Villas.
The new set of homes will be built in the open lot located on Schneider Road in south Toledo.
"This is all possible because of a tax incentive that the city provided last October, we just expanded the tax credit to this part of Toledo now," said Mayor Wade Kapszukiewicz.
He said this fresh set of homes is well needed as over 82% of all of the houses in Toledo are at least 50 years old.
Dan Bollin with Eagle Creek Builders said they also saw a need in the community.
"As we looked around at the neighborhood here, and if you're looking at a lot of the houses, a lot [are] probably 40 to 50 years old," Bollin said. "A lot of the laundry rooms are in the basement so what we're trying to do is everything is on one level, no steps so it's all access for people."
Providing 1,400 square feet of space, the homes will have two bedrooms, two baths, a sunroom and will be ranch-style.
"An option that increasingly many seniors want as they get a little older and might have a hard time getting upstairs and moving around with their hips and knees and such," Toledo Mayor Wade Kapszukiewicz said.
The pre-construction starting prices for these new homes are $229,900 and the builder is currently accepting deposits.
"In six months you'll be able to move in. We have deposits on four units right now and we're taking preconstruction discounts right now so now's the time to get a deposit down and hold your unit," Bollin said.
Construction for these units is set to start next week with the sewer system.
