LUCAS COUNTY, Ohio — The dog licensing period in Lucas County is now open ahead of 2025. Here's how to purchase a dog license from the Lucas County Auditor's Office so that you are in compliance with state law.
According to a press release from the Lucas County Auditor's Office, the licensing period began Tuesday and will last through Jan. 31, 2025. Every dog aged three months and older must be registered in the county in which it is kept, according to Ohio law.
How much do licenses cost?
License fees are as follows, per dog:
- $25 for one year
- $75 for three years
- $250 for the life of the dog
Some veterans may be eligible for free dog licenses. For more information, veterans should call the Veterans Service Commission at 419-213-6090 or visit the office at 2595 Arlington Ave., the auditor's office said. The commission can also provide a voucher for dog adoption.
Licensing your dog late comes with the penalty of a late fee equal to the cost of the annual license, in addition to the original fee itself, the county said.

What do the licenses fund?
In the press release, the county auditor's office said dog license fees go toward assisting Lucas County Canine Care and Control provide shelter, food and medical care for stray dogs, as well as other services like reuniting dogs with their owners.
"Your 2025 dog license is your pet’s ticket home, should it ever get lost,” Commissioner Pete Gerken said in the press release. “When Lucas County Canine Control officers find a stray dog out in the field that is wearing a tag, they are able to easily and quickly identify the dog and reunite it with their owner.”
