TOLEDO, Ohio — An organization is working to find homes for pets in shelters by reducing adoption fees at shelters across the US, including several in Ohio.

According to a press release, two northwest Ohio animal shelters will participate in BISSELL Pet Foundation's effort to "empty the shelters" this holiday season. Its sponsorship allows shelters to charge $50 or less for adoption fees.

The event will be held at the shelters between Dec. 1 and Dec. 17. Participating shelters include the Toledo Humane Society and Wood County Humane Society, as well as several others in Ohio. In southeast Michigan, the Lenawee Humane Society is also participating, according to BISSELL's website.

Other Ohio participating shelters include the following:

  • Animal Friends Humane Society
  • Cincinnati Animal CARE
  • Cleveland Animal Protective League
  • Colony Cats (& Dogs)
  • Humane Society Of Greater Dayton
  • Humane Society of the Ohio Valley
  • Louie's Legacy Animal Rescue

The effort seeks to find animals a forever home before the holidays.

“Empty the Shelters – Holiday Hope is more than an adoption event; it’s a lifeline for homeless pets. Please visit your local participating shelter to adopt or foster a pet this holiday season," said Cathy Bissell, Founder of BISSELL Pet Foundation, in the press release.

The Toledo Humane Society is located at 827 Illinois Ave. in Maumee; the Wood County Humane Society is located at 801 Van Camp Rd. in Bowling Green.
