Is Thanksgiving more expensive this year? Shoppers share tips for saving money

Many shoppers WTOL 11 spoke with said they are still seeing higher-than-normal prices due to inflation.

TOLEDO, Ohio — With Thanksgiving just a few days away, lots of people hit the stores Monday to stock up on foods for holiday meals and hopefully at a good deal.

Mike Hanson, a Toledo resident shopping at Costco Monday, said he saw a few good deals with items being around three to five dollars off.

"Their turkeys are on sale. I always get the butterball because it stays moist and it's 99 cents a pound," Jaleh Eslami, another shopper at Costco said. "I guess you can get it from Kroger about the same."

"Turkeys are 33 cents a pound. So no not too bad just compared to the last couple of years," said Lois Bushman, a shopper at Meijer.

Although turkeys may not be the item driving up the bill this year, shoppers said the overall cost is still quite high.

Molly Junga, who was out shopping with her granddaughter, is using coupons to stick to her budget this holiday.

"Look at your coupons, if you have Facebook or whatever, check your prices. If it's one price at one store, they'll match it at the other, so that's what I do," Junga said. "Prices are actually a lot higher than they've ever been but with the holidays, you kind of find yourself spending a little bit more than you do normally."

Others say prices compared to last year may be slightly higher but no shock to them.

"I thought they were comparable. They're always a little high anyway so what do you do? No shocks," Deb Smith and Jack Smith, a couple shopping at Meijer said.

Shoppers also recommend people get to the stores sooner rather than later as parking lots are already becoming quite packed.
