TIFFIN, Ohio — Downtown Tiffin is getting an upgrade with some free Wi-Fi.
Five years after completing a Wi-Fi and fiber optic internet study, the city of Tiffin is finally able to act on the study's recommendations.
They have partnered with local company Bascom Communications to now offer free public Wi-Fi in the central corridor of their downtown.
Users can simply find the "Community Connect" Wi-Fi signal and log on.
The service comes with no cost to the city, as Bascom Communications will run a 30 second advertisement for every hour of public Wi-Fi used.
Mayor Aaron Montz says municipalities offering free public Wi-Fi should become commonplace in the near future, as it is becoming an essential tool in drawing visitors and new businesses to communities.
"Wi-Fi and technology is the way to go," said Montz. "How are you ever going to be able to bring in office-type businesses or those that need a lot of bandwidth unless you have access like this throughout your commercial corridor?"
Montz says that this free public Wi-Fi program is easily expandable and the coverage area could grow throughout other parts of downtown once they see how folks are using the service.
