JPMorgan Chase suing customers who use viral TikTok trend to commit check fraud

A spokesperson with JPMorgan Chase said the company is cooperating with law enforcement and making sure anyone committing fraud is held accountable.

COLUMBUS, Ohio — The parent company of Chase Bank is cracking down on people attempting to get “free” cash from a viral trend that they saw on social media.

CNN reports that several videos that are viral on TikTok show people depositing checks for large sums of money at Chase ATMs. They then make a withdrawal for a smaller yet substantial amount of money before the check clears.

This process led people to believe they had discovered a bug and were hitting a jackpot.

JPMorgan confirmed with 10TV that thousands of people have tried this trend at ATMs. The company is suing customers who used the trend and reminding people that doing the trend is committing fraud.

A spokesperson with JPMorgan Chase said the company is cooperating with law enforcement and making sure anyone committing fraud is held accountable.

Statement from JPMorgan Chase:

“Fraud is a crime that impacts everyone and undermines trust in the banking system. We’re pursuing these cases and actively cooperating with law enforcement to make sure if someone is committing fraud against Chase and its customers, they’re held accountable.”
