FREMONT, Ohio — Fremont residents and elected officials are helping out a fellow resident after he was scammed out of a large sum of money.
A violent storm passed through Fremont last month and left parts of the city with damages. A city employee received an email he thought was from Fremont mayor Danny Sanchez.
The emailer asked the employee to purchase $1,000 worth of gift cards to help Fremont pay for the damages. Trying to help his community, the employee complied. The situation turned out to be a scam, stealing $1,000 of the employee's personal funds.
"There's no way to recover that money and we wanted to be able to make it right and show him that we appreciated his efforts," Mayor Sanchez said. "We all came together as a city to make him whole for being a victim of that crime."
Mayor Sanchez and others within city government raised $1,000 dollars to give back to the employee.
