TOLEDO, Ohio — Have you ever wondered what prime real estate in downtown Toledo looks like?
A penthouse located on the top floor of the Commodore Perry Apartments hit the market last month. According to its Zillow listing, the space was initially priced at $715,000 before being cut down to $550,000 in early May.
The condo was purchased in 1999 by Emily Robertson, a retired teacher and principal from the Chicago area. There were no interior walls or basic utilities at the time of the purchase.
Robertson worked with local architect Bob Seyfang and spent over $400,000 to renovate the top floor suite. Robertson moved in after six years of work.
The condo is located on the 19th floor and can only be reached by private elevator. The 4,266-square-foot penthouse includes two bedrooms and 2.5 bathrooms, and plenty of picturesque views of the city.
Fifth Third Field is visible from some windows.
There is also a large private balcony overlooking Toledo that includes nearly all of the Commodore Perry's rooftop. Peregrine falcons frequently nest on the roof, and the state's first peregrine nesting box was placed there in 1988, according to Connec Toledo.
The Commodore Perry Hotel was built in 1927 for $3 million. It was the largest hotel between Chicago and Cleveland with 500 rooms, 11 miles of carpet, 4,000 pieces of bedroom furniture and nearly 38,000 pieces of fine china.
Guests of the hotel included presidents Harry Truman and Richard Nixon; Eleanor Roosevelt, Joe DiMaggio, Jack Benny and the King and Queen of Greece. Elvis Presley once got into a fistfight at the hotel bar in 1956.
The hotel closed in 1980 and the building was reimagined as apartments in the late 1990s.
