Cucumber recall impacts products sold at select Walmart stores in Ohio: Check the list to see if you have any

Although the products are past shelf life and should already be out of distribution, the FDA is advising any consumers who have the cucumbers to throw them away.

WILLARD, Ohio — A voluntary recall has been issued by Wiers Farm Inc. out of an abundance of caution for cucumbers that were sold at select Walmart stores in Ohio, Michigan and Indiana due to possible contamination with Listeria.

The FDA says the company -- based in Willard in Huron County -- issued the recall for the following products after the potential contamination was discovered by the Michigan Department of Agriculture and Rural Development through routine sampling:

Whole cucumbers

  • Pack date of June 5
  • Size: 1.5-2.5 inch diameter, 6-9 inch length

Wiers Farm 2 pound bagged salad cucumber

  • Pack date of June 5 and June 6
  • Packaging: Clear bag with blue base

The specific Walmart locations that sold the impacted products was not provided, but you can see images of the packaging below.

“This product was not grown or harvested by Wiers Farm,” according to the FDA. “It was sourced from out of state, then handled and distributed by Wiers Farm. Wiers Farm Inc. is coordinating closely with regulatory officials in connection with the recall.”

Although the product is past its shelf life and should already be out of distribution, the FDA is advising any consumers who have the cucumbers to throw them away.

There have been no illness or consumer complaints reported in connection with this recall.

“Listeria monocytogenes is a type of bacteria that can cause listeriosis,” the FDA explains. “Symptoms vary depending on the severity of the illness and symptoms may last from days to several weeks. Consumers who have consumed the affected product and are experiencing symptoms such as fever, muscle aches and gastrointestinal issues should seek medical attention.”

“Wiers Farm operates to the highest standards of health and food safety,” according to the recall alert. “We have taken immediate steps to address this isolated incident and we are collaborating closely with the Ohio Department of Agriculture (ODA) to ensure a swift resolution.”
