ARCHBOLD, OH (Toledo News Now) - An investigation continues into a possible sexting situation at Archbold High School. The Attorney General's office says inappropriate texts may have been circulating on the cell phones of students there.
School officials were first made aware of the sexting problem in October when a student told a guidance counselor at the high school that there were inappropriate images going around. Officials believe several students may be involved.
“With the way technology is today, I guess I shouldn't be surprised that it happens but I think you're always disappointed,” said Archbold Superintendent Aaron Rex.
“It's unfortunate; kids make mistakes,” said Chief Joe Wyse of the Archbold Police Department. “Sometimes as a kid, you don't really think before you do things. Maybe if they had been a little bit older and put a little thought process behind it, maybe they would not have done it.”
It's not yet known if school computers or iPads were used, or the exact nature of the inappropriate pictures and words. About a month after investigating the possible sexting at the high school, the Archbold Police Department turned the investigation over to the Attorney General's office.
“Our cyber crime unit has to get involved whenever you have computers or cell phones,” said Ohio Attorney General Mike DeWine. “You have to be able to retrieve these images. That takes some work and takes some expertise.”
Once the Attorney General's office completes their investigation, it'll then be handed over to the Fulton County Prosecutor's Office, where it will be decided if any charges are filed.
This sexting investigation may involve other schools as well.
