Bad mosquito forecast predicted due to rainy spring

Mosquito season is underway and it's going to be busy

TOLEDO, Ohio — Health officials say this will be one of the worst mosquito seasons we've ever seen.

Paul Bauman with the Toledo Area Sanitary District said this year's mosquito forecast doesn't look too good.

"We're definitely going to see a lot of adult mosquitoes pretty quickly."

Heavy rainfall this spring and standing water isn't helping the problem.

"The good news is we've started testing mosquito for viruses. We havent seen any virus activity yet. Virus activity around the state has been pretty low so far." said Bauman.

Bauman added that during wet years like this, typically mosquitoes are not associated with a lot of virus activity. This year will be more of a pest problem.

Crews have been out spraying for the pests to prevent them from being a problem. But mosquito populations are expected to thrive with the abundance of rainfall this spring and as temperatures go up.

"With the cooler weather its kept things pretty slow. We can try to get to as much water as we can before they hatch. But inevitably the weather is going to warm, they will mature and we'll get a lot of adult mosquitoes. The continuing rain is not a good thing for us," said Bauman.
