BOWLING GREEN, OH (Toledo News Now) - School is back in session at Bowling Green State University and police say they have been keeping busy.
They say there have been two sexual assaults since August and they are now increasing patrols.
"We see an uptick in everything the first couple of months of school. So sexual assaults usually, the majority of our sexual assaults for the year are reported at the end of August, September, and beginning of October," said Chief Monica Moll.
She says they also see a lot of underage drinking and DUIs, but it doesn't just happen on campus. So BGSU police rely on communication with the city police to monitor the off campus areas.
"The backup aspect is very important. We all traverse the city streets, they make traffic stops within town, and we make traffic stops on campus," said BGPD Chief Tony Hetrick.
Chief Moll and Chief Hetrick say it's all about a united front to maintain order within the city. Both departments go through a lot of training, often times together, to make sure they know how to handle any situation.
Chief Moll says they handled the sexual assaults at the beginning of the year in the same way. She says using communication between the two departments is key, because students don't always know the boundaries.
"They're not always sure where to report things and they sometimes don't understand that when they report it to one department the other might not be aware of it. And that's why Tony and I try to keep in touch with each other on a weekly and sometimes daily basis, especially at the beginning of the school year," said Mull.
Both departments say camaraderie between their officers is equally important and something they strive for.
