Bishop announces closure of east Toledo church

Members of Good Shepherd Parish learned their church will close and they will merge with the nearby Epiphany of the Lord Parish.

TOLEDO, OH (Toledo News Now) - Bishop Daniel Thomas is announcing the closure of an east Toledo church.

Members of Good Shepherd Parish learned their church will close and they will merge with the nearby Epiphany of the Lord Parish.

Good Shepherd was founded in 1873 to serve the city's growing Irish immigrant community.

As of last month, there were only 550 parishioners and Mass attendance had sharply dropped in recent years.

Bishop Thomas says Good Shepherd was operating at a deficit.

In a letter to parishioners, Bishop Thomas wrote, "sadly, in cases such as this, the inability of a parish to be self-sustaining and viable means that the parish has essentially closed itself.  While such a merger may invoke feelings of deep pain, uncertainty and a sense of loss, it should not diminish our faith."

Good Shepherd Parish will close and merge with Epiphany of the Lord Parish on August 24th.
