Bowling Green plans 'No Refusal Weekend' to promote safe driving

Bowling Green police are planning to strictly enforce on of Ohio's laws regarding driving while intoxicated this weekend.

BOWLING GREEN, OH (WTOL) – Bowling Green police are planning to strictly enforce one of Ohio's laws regarding driving while intoxicated this weekend.

The "No Refusal Weekend" is all about Ohio laws involving breath tests.  If a driver is pulled over and suspected of driving under the influence of alcohol, the refusal of a breath test can lead to a warrant for a blood test.

Police say the crackdown is designed to educate the public. The Bowling Green prosecutor's office says some attorneys claim the current law is a violation of civil liberties.

Shamir Coll, a BGSU student, disagrees with the attorneys, and says a crackdown on drinking and driving is necessary:

"From my experiences, I know it's been scary.  You know, being involved in that kind of atmosphere because you don't know what could happen.  You don't know when it could be your turn to have a bad experience with alcohol and driving."

Police say they are watching the streets more closely this weekend to protect the liberties of those who are driving safely. They say those liberties are violated by those who drive under the influence.

"They not only put themselves at risk, but they also put anybody else that's out in the public at risk.  Anytime that risk is presented to the public, the impact that that risk can have on people, it can be pretty far-reaching." Lieutenant Biller told WTOL.

Lieutenant Biller says that a lot of people do not know about breath test procedures in Ohio, and he is hoping the crackdown will get the word out.
