TOLEDO, OH (Toledo News Now) - Five catalytic converters have been stolen out of trucks at a business in south Toledo.
Police are asking for help to find who stole the parts from the Integrity Roofing and Construction Company on South Avenue, near Airport Highway. They say the fence was cut, allowing for the suspect or suspects to get in and steal the converters.
Toledo Police Sgt. Joe Heffernan says this type of crime seems to happen in spurts, mainly because there are state and city laws that make it difficult to sell them. Ohio law says that any one person can only sell one catalytic converter in a single day.
In Toledo, the law is even stricter.
“We made it a special purchase item, which means that they need to have some type of proof of ownership in order to sell it,” Sgt. Heffernan said. “And then again, [they] can only sell one per day.”
The converters contain precious metals, so there's a high re-sale value. But with the restrictions in the city, police believe thieves are taking the loot somewhere else to sell.
