SANDUSKY, OH (Toledo News Now) - While winter is usually a down time for the construction industry, crews have been busy the entire cold season at Cedar Point.
Last year, Cedar Point introduced its new Gatekeeper roller coaster. Although there are no new coasters this year, there will be two new family-friendly rides on the newly-renovated Gemini Midway.
Pipe Scream is just one of the many new attractions slated to debut this summer at the park voted the "Best Amusement Park in the World." Guests will also be able to enjoy the new Lake Erie Eagles and SlingShot rides, a multitude of new food choices, a refreshed Camp Snoopy kids' area, new cabins at Lighthouse Point, live shows and more.
Cedar Point officials wanted to cater to families with smaller children who can't go on the larger, thrill rides.
"[We focused on] giving the families new attractions, as well as a nice area to hang out in," said Jason McClure, vice president and general manager of Cedar Point.
The entire midway is also being renovated from the ground up. Two new family-oriented food options are also being installed.
"We took out the old asphalt that was always hot, added more shade to the area," said McClure.
The hope is to turn this stretch of the midway into a place where people can spend more of their time.
"This was kind of a runway from Magnum to the back of the park. And now there's going to be a good reason for people to hang out and spend some time in this area," said McClure.
Cedar Point opens to the general public for the 2014 season on Saturday, May 10.
