ADRIAN, Mich. — As spring flowers continue to bloom, there's a growing buzz when it comes to everyone's favorite pollinators.
A group in Adrian is hosting an event on Saturday for bee lovers and those who would like to learn more.
Janet Tucker has been beekeeping for about a decade and says it started as a simple way to gather her own honey.
But the hobby quickly grew into a passion, which led her to learn and work with other beekeepers at the River Raisin Beekeepers Club.
"It's not an easy hobby, you can't just jump into it. There's a lot of learning that goes along with it," she said. "We also know that without mentors, beekeepers within two years will quit because they just can't get all of the information that they need. You really need somebody to help you along and that's where the club comes in."
The practice of beekeeping at home has been growing over the last handful of years, Janet says. More and more people are interested in taking up the practice to not only have homegrown honey, but to also help the declining pollinator population.
For the third year, the River Raisin Beekeepers Club is hosting an event where both experienced and novice beekeepers can learn more.
"This is our way as a club to kind of help get that information out to people. Knowing what they can do and what they can't do, how they can help the pollinators," Tucker said.
The Bee Day Festival will feature local vendors, honey tasting, a silent auction and plenty of demonstrations and hands-on experiences to broaden beekeepers' knowledge or introduce novices to the hobby.
For those who can't or aren't interested in keeping bees on your property, you will still be able to learn plenty of best practices to help out bees in your area.
"We'll have a couple of gardeners there to talk about pollinating plants that you can put into your gardens to help the pollinators and the process for that," Tucker said.
The third Annual Bee Day Festival will run on Saturday from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. at the St. John Church in Adrian.
