TOLEDO, Ohio — If you're looking for something fun to do this weekend, look no further than the 70th annual Delta Chicken Festival.
Rides, attractions, a car show and fireworks are just some of the features of the festival. Of course, you can enjoy a chicken dinner in the spirit of the event.
Katy Miller, the Delta Chicken Festival's co-chair, explained what it means to organize an event like this for the community she lives in.
"The festival encourages people. It encourages people to clean up their yards, it encourages people to be a part of our community, it encourages people to volunteer, and it encourages people to encourage the children to volunteer," Miller said. "And to me, that's what community is all about."
The festival has been around since 1954, when the small village of Delta was looking to buy 23 acres of land for the community.
The village needed $10,000 for the land and decided to grill chicken halves and sell them to help raise money. That's how the festival was created.
Kj Abair, co-chair of the Festival, shared what people can expect to see if they attend.
"We have our fireworks show, which brings in a ton of people, our 3v3 basketball tournament: the Nate Parsons Memorial tournament. We have that on Friday night," Abair said. "We have our chicken run, our 3v3 soccer, our parade, and our car show bright and early in the morning. So, we have all kinds of different activities that happen here throughout the weekend."
The festival continues Friday through Saturday night. More information including a schedule of events is available at the Delta Chicken Festival website.
