TOLEDO, Ohio — One of the largest collections of original children's book art at a public library in the United States is right here in Toledo.
Rose Ann “Posy” Huebner, an educator who was passionate about the role of art in children's literature, co-founded the Robert L. Huebner and Posy Huebner Collection with her husband at the Toledo Lucas County Public Library.
The collection began 20 years ago with a donation of 13 original illustrations and has expanded to more than 240 works of art, making it one of the largest collections of original children’s book art in a public library in the United States, according to a press release from the Toledo Library.
To commemorate this milestone, the Toledo Library will host “Celebrating 20 Years of Children’s Book Illustrations” on Dec. 14 from 2 to 4 p.m. at the Main Library. This free event will feature a talk by award-winning Ohio author and illustrator Will Hillenbrand, along with art displays from the collection throughout the Main Library.
Hillenbrand, who has published more than 70 books, will read from his newest title, "The Voice in the Hollow," and his well-loved book, "Little Red." He will also discuss the Huebner Collection and sign books for attendees afterward.
More than 60 pieces from the collection will be on display in the Main Library art gallery, including framed artworks and sculptures. Additionally, 75 illustrations and a collection of Dr. Seuss sculptures will be showcased at the Children’s Library, while Nancy Drew-inspired art will be featured in the Teen Library.
“The Robert L. and Posy Huebner Collection is one of several signature collections at the Toledo Library,” said Nancy Eames, the library's youth services coordinator. “These works of art not only enhance our Library spaces, but they also allow children and their families to connect with some of their favorite stories in a new way.”
The Huebner Collection features works from notable illustrators, including Caldecott Medal winners Marcia Brown, Tomie dePaola and Maurice Sendak. It also highlights local artists, with original pieces by Toledo talents Drew Bairley, Wil Clay, Denise Fleming, Carrie Hauman and Ruth Summers, as well as artwork from books by Toledo authors Nancy Meredith, Jan Wahl and Mary Helen Harper Wright.
Art from the collection rotates between the Main Library and its 12 branches. The collection is supported by the Library Legacy Foundation, which the library described as championing literacy, education and cultural enrichment through various programs.
