Wildlife Park recycling donated Christmas trees

The African Safari Wildlife Park in Port Clinton is accepting real Christmas tree donations for animals and the park to put to use.

PORT CLINTON, Ohio — There are many places accepting real Christmas trees as the holiday season comes to a close, but one place in particular is asking for your tree to put every single part to use!

The African Safari Wildlife Park in Port Clinton is home to over 400 animals and just like humans, they too like Christmas. The animals feed off and play with Christmas trees. They eat the pine needles, chew on the branches, scrape off all the bark and use them as scratching posts.

"This is one of the most favorite times of year for our animals," said Kelsey Keller, director at The African Safari Wildlife Park. "They get tons of enrichment and we can take (the trees) out all month long for the month of January."

After the animals are done eating and playing, the trees are composted and used as mulch around the park in the spring.

"This is a great way to get rid of your Christmas tree and do something fun with it," said Keller. "It's a great way for your kids to say they helped out the animals at African Safari."

The park is accepting real tree donations until Saturday. You can drop them off at the park daily between 10 a.m. - 4 p.m.
