MAUMEE, Ohio — UPDATE: According to a city spokesperson, registration for the event is now full.

The city of Maumee is celebrating having received the Strongest Town award with a community cookout.

Maumee was named the Strongest Town Champion in April after competing against 60 other Canadian and American cities competing in the bracket-style tournament. To commemorate the achievement, the city announced plans for a free community event.

According to a press release from the city issued Tuesday, the Saturday, June 22 event will feature grilled food, live music, an inflatable slide and carnival games.

Initially planned to be held at the White Street parking lot alongside the Tow Path, the event was moved to an area along the Tow Path to the east of the Fort Meigs Memorial Bridge. The move was made to accommodate larger tents, a city spokesperson said in a press release.

The city recommends that attendees park throughout Uptown Maumee and walk to the site. It can be accessed from the bridge, the White Street Parking lot and Side Cut Metropark.

In addition to street parking, the city said the First Presbyterian Church on 200 East Broadway will allow parking in their lot, and the city administration building's parking lot on Conant Street will also be open. Due to the added walk to the location from parking areas and the intense heat forecasted Saturday, the city asked attendees to plan accordingly.

The event will still take place from noon to 3 p.m.

"The city of Maumee could not have achieved the accomplishment of Strongest Town Champion without the incredible support of many residents and business owners who share the city's vision for a Stronger Maumee," a city spokesperson said in the press release.

Maumee, the lone Ohio representative in the bracket's sweet 16, beat Norfolk, Neb., in the finals, according to the Strongest Town Contest's website. Maumee also beat Bloomington, Ill., and Medicine Hat, Ala., on its way to victory earlier this year.
