Wood County law enforcement offering free active shooter defense training

The event is on Tuesday June 18, from 4:30-7:30 p.m. in Perrysburg.

PERRYSBURG, Ohio — The Wood County law enforcement agencies want to help you get prepared for active attacks.

There have been more than 600 mass shootings each year since 2020, according to the Gun Violence Archive

On  June 18, members of the Wood County Sheriff's Office and SWAT teams will be presenting the Civilian Response to Active Shooter Event (C.R.A.S.E.)

"Why not be better prepared. Why not take every advantage you can to be better prepared in a potential situation like what we are going to show on Tuesday," said Sgt. Ryan Richards, a detective sergeant with the Wood County Sheriff's Office.

This training is designed and built on the avoid, deny, defend strategy along with stop the bleed training.

Medics will demonstrate how to identify and control life-threatening bleeding. If you attend, you will learn direct pressure techniques using tourniquets and gauze.

Detective Sergeant Richards said they want to be sure everyone gets home to their families safely. He said this training is just one-way civilians can better themselves and their rapid response skills.

"Just be aware of your surroundings. We will also get into the science behind what your body does during an active attack. So this isn't a new thing, it's being done by different law enforcement agencies throughout the United States. Alert developed it and they have it for law enforcement agencies who have taken the course for trainers and then deliver it to their communities," said Sgt. Richards.

A tactical medic with the Wood County Sheriff's Office special response team said over two-thirds of preventable causes of death in these situations involve bleeding control.

He said this event will teach people how to pack a wound and stop the bleeding to give people their best chance at surviving.

"Our goal is to provide the awareness to give somebody the opportunity to make a difference in that situation if it ever would arise for them. It's not the common situation most people will ever face but if they shall find themselves in that situation, we want to give them the tools to possibly have that impact of saving somebody's life, if possible," said Lt. Brandon Westerman with Wood County Sheriff's Office S.W.A.T.

The C.R.A.S.E. event is on Tuesday June 18, from 4:30-7:30 p.m. at the Penta Career Center Auditorium located at 9301 Buck Rd., in Perrysburg.
