Man pleads no contest, convicted in 2023 west Toledo shooting homicide

TOLEDO, Ohio — A man charged in a 2023 west Toledo shooting death of Levell Saunders pleaded no contest to multiple charges Tuesday.

According to court records, Alton Reid withdrew his previous plea of not guilty and pleaded no contest to the following charges in Saunders' death:

  • Involuntary manslaughter, a first-degree felony, 
  • Felonious assault, a second-degree felony
  • Participating in a criminal gang, a second-degree felony

Reid was arrested in April 2023 after police said he shot Saunders, 34, who was driving a car near Jackman Road and Central Avenue. Saunders and another victim in the vehicle crashed, and were transported to the hospital where Saunders later died. 

Reid's earlier charges, upon his arrest, included two counts of murder, two counts of felonious assault, one count of discharging a firearm on or near prohibited premises and one count of having weapons while under disability.

Reid was convicted and remains in custody. He will be sentenced on Dec. 18.
