TOLEDO, Ohio — Police are investigating an ATM theft in west Toledo, an incident that authorities said involved the use of a hotwired forklift.
According to a Toledo police report, officers were investigating a theft at the shopping plaza at 4861 Dorr St. on Monday at approximately 9 a.m. Contractors working at a construction site behind the plaza building told police they had arrived at the site Monday morning and discovered a forklift still running.
The contractors said part of an ATM was still attached the the forklift, which police said they corroborated, adding that it was a Fifth Third ATM attached to the vehicle, which police said had been hotwired.
Additionally, the nearby Fifth Third ATM in the parking lot of the plaza was missing, police said.
Officers asked area businesses if they had cameras operating at the time, but police said they were unsuccessful in locating video evidence of the incident.
Police also said they were not able to narrow down an exact timeline of the incident. Officers were, however, able to speak with the owner of the forklift, who said it had been parked Sunday night "on the opposite side" from where the contractors found it the following morning.
WTOL 11 asked Toledo police if this incident was being investigated as related to a Nov. 18 ATM theft in central Toledo, also involving a forklift. A Toledo police spokesperson said it was unknown at this time if the two incidents are related.
Police also did not name any suspects.
