SYLVANIA TOWNSHIP, Ohio — Sylvania Township police reported two additional check washing incidents, both of which were allegedly dropped off at a post box at the Monroe Street USPS office for mailing.

According to reports from Sylvania Township police, a victim told police three mailed checks had been altered for much higher amounts than that for which they had been originally written. The victim told police she mailed three checks to utility companies and an additional organization, but all three had been altered.

The victim said the first check was altered from $58 to $4,800 and the payee was also changed. A second check originally written for $4,100 was also altered to a different payee; the third check, which was mailed in February 2023 but hadn't cleared until December 2023, also had the payee altered and total changed to $2,450 from an initially lower amount.

The checks had been deposited at the outdoor mailbox located at the USPS office in the 5100 block of Monroe Street in late November, according to the report. The victim filed the report with police on Dec. 15, 2023.

In a second incident, an additional victim told police a check also mailed at the Monroe Street USPS office had been altered. According to the report, the name on the check had been changed, and the amount had been altered from approximately $1,700 to $2,400. The victim made the report on Dec. 18 after having mailed the check on Dec. 11.

These reports came in addition to several previous incidents of check washing in the Toledo area in past months, including a check altered from $500 to $4,800, also at the Monroe Street USPS office. Sylvania Township police have also reported victims claiming their checks mailed from the Bancroft and Holland-Sylvania USPS box have been altered.
