Armed man whom police shot in 2023 sentenced

Darnell Peppers, 24, was armed when an officer shot him in downtown Toledo in October 2023, according to police.

TOLEDO, Ohio — A Lucas County judge delivered a sentence Tuesday for Darnell Peppers, who pleaded guilty in June to felony charges that stemmed from a 2023 incident in which police shot him.

Peppers, 24, was sentenced after he was convicted of two charges: attempted carrying of a concealed weapon, a fifth-degree felony; and resisting arrest, a fourth-degree felony. According to court records, he was sentenced to 12 months on the first charge and 18 months on the second.

Peppers was arrested in October 2023 after police said they noticed him wearing an unusual amount of clothing for a warm day, and a bulge in his hoodie pocket that looked like a weapon.

When officers attempted to stop Peppers, who was walking toward a crowded bus stop, to talk to him, police said he ran.

A brief foot pursuit continued to Orange and North Superior streets, in front of the Blade building.

An officer yelled that Peppers had a weapon and ordered him to get down on the ground. Peppers then turned toward the officer with the gun in his hand and Fischer shot him, grazing his thigh.

Officers found a Ruger 9mm gun on Peppers, Toledo Police Chief Michael Troendle said. The gun was loaded with 17 rounds, one of which was in the chamber, he said.

A Lucas County grand jury later determined no charges were necessary for the Toledo police officer who shot an armed man in downtown Toledo in October.
