Man charged with felonious assault after allegedly biting 'chunk' out of victim's ear during fight

According to police, security video showed the suspect throwing an object down a storm drain after the alleged fight.

BOWLING GREEN, Ohio — A man was charged after allegedly biting off part of another person's ear during an altercation in Bowling Green early Monday.

According to a Bowling Green police report, officers were dispatched to a bar at 162 N. Main St. at approximately 1:30 a.m. regarding a fight. Dispatch told officers the suspect had left the location but provided a description of the male suspect.

Police observed a suspect matching the description walking eastbound in the 100 block of East Court Street and stopped him. The suspect, who police later identified as Jesus Garcia, had blood on his face and hands and a small laceration under his right eye, police claimed.

Police questioned Garcia, who claimed he had been in a physical altercation with a male, but was unable to provide police with a description of the other person. Garcia later told police he and the other male had gotten into a fight over a chair in the bar. According to the report, Garcia said he was outside the bar when two males ran up to him; Garcia claimed everything he did was in self-defense.

According to police, a review of downtown cameras showed Garcia moving westbound on East Court Street, running toward the male with whom he had been in an altercation; the second person kicked at Garcia, and the two got into an altercation. Police said Garcia could be seen "hanging" onto the victim's left side of the head with his face.

A third male pulled Garcia away from the fight; Garcia then allegedly stood up, picked up some objects and placed them in his pockets. In a report, police said Garcia attempted to return to the bar, but was pushed back by an unknown female. Garcia then was observed on camera walking toward a storm drain, digging his pockets. Garcia then allegedly was observed throwing something into the storm drain.

Police located the victim, who told police he had left the bar to smoke; when he stepped back into the bar, he noticed someone had taken his chair. The victim then walked over to the other side of the bar to sit and was approached by one of the males, who allegedly antagonized him.

The victim told police he and Garcia then walked out to the back of the bar, where they had a verbal argument, but returned back to the bar. The victim told police he decided to leave the bar approximately 10 minutes later, when he saw Garcia running at him. Garcia then allegedly began kicking and physically assaulting the victim.

After this incident police observed the victim with a bandage held against his ear in the bar, where an unknown female told police a chunk of his ear had been bitten off after a fight.

Police began searching for the chunk of missing ear, but were unable to locate it, authorities said in their reports.

Authorities transported Garcia to the hospital, where he was medically cleared and booked at the Wood County Justice Center. Garcia was charged with felonious assault and tampering with evidence.

Garcia made an initial appearance in Bowling Green Municipal Court Monday; the case was continued to Tuesday. A judge set Garcia's bond at $50,000 and ordered him to not have any contact with the victim.
