TOLEDO, Ohio — An east Toledo man is in custody after allegedly assaulting his pregnant girlfriend and forcing her to remain in a bedroom, all while children remained in the "uninhabitable" home.

According to a Toledo police report, officers were told by the family member of the victim, whom police said was in a relationship with the suspect, that she was being held against her will in her home. The text messages from the victim to the family member stated that 29-year-old Luis Bahena would not allow the victim, whom police said lived with him, to leave the home.

Police responded to the east Toledo home in the 2600 block of Idaho Street Wednesday morning, where they were not able to get the victim to come to the door. Officers ultimately forced entry to the home and took Bahena into custody.

Toledo police said Bahena, who has mutual children with the victim, would force the victim to remain in the bedroom when he was not at home. He also allegedly placed a camera on the dresser in the bedroom to monitor her, and used threats of violence, as well as physical violence, to ensure she complied.

Police also said in an arrest document that Bahena allegedly assaulted the victim with a belt, leaving visible injuries.

In the report, police said the home had no running water and described the residence's conditions as "uninhabitable". Three small children were found in the home.

Bahena was arrested and charged with felony domestic violence and abduction in Toledo Municipal Court.
