Hillsdale County deputy, suspect accused of shooting deputy both dead, police say

The deputy is not being named at this time, according to authorities. Police shot the suspect, Eric Fiddler, in a field after he allegedly shot at officers.

HILLSDALE COUNTY, Mich. — A Hillsdale County sheriff's deputy and a suspect accused of shooting the deputy have both died from gunshot wounds, according to the Michigan State Police's first district.

MSP said it will not name the deputy at this time, pending notification of family.

Eric Fiddler, the suspect accused of shooting the deputy Thursday afternoon, was found by police in a field near the intersection of Culbert and Osseo roads about two miles northwest of the where the deputy was shot.

"Fiddler was instructed to surrender and produced a weapon and fired on troopers. Troopers returned fire and Fiddler was pronounced deceased on scene," according to MSP.

Police warned the public to be on the lookout for Fiddler after he allegedly shot the deputy near the intersection of Beecher and Lamb roads about 25 miles west of Adrian, 

MSP said further details will be released on Friday.
