UPDATE: This story has been edited to include the latest information from the Village of Clinton Police Department.

One person was hospitalized and another has died after an incident in northern Lenawee County Tuesday night that garnered a significant police presence.

According to a press release from the Village of Clinton Police Department Wednesday, authorities were called to a home in the 200 block of East Church Street shortly after 8 p.m. following a domestic violence assault incident.

Police spoke with an adult victim at the home who said she had been physically assaulted by another adult in the household. The victim had sustained "obvious facial injuries," police said, which they described as consistent with a physical altercation. The victim was hospitalized with non-life threatening injuries.

Authorities said everyone else, barring the suspect, had exited the home when police heard what they described as two loud "popping" sounds, one after another, which police said they recognized as gunfire.

Additional law enforcement presence was requested, and the Lenawee County Sheriff's Office and the Tecumseh Police Department responded and established a perimeter around the home. The sheriff's office's tactical team was also at the scene and authorities were seen utilizing a drone.

The scene around a residence in the upper portion of Lenawee County cleared shortly before midnight after authorities had it surrounded earlier Tuesday night attempting to make contact with a potential shooting suspect inside. A shelter-in-place order was sent out to residents in the immediate area.

Law enforcement said they issued verbal commands to the suspect to enter the home, but did not receive a response. After obtaining a search warrant, they entered the home and found a male suspect deceased from what appeared to be a self-inflicted gunshot wound, police said. They later identified the suspect as 42-year-old Joseph Johnson from Adrian, Michigan.
