Lenawee County man dies week after assault; detectives seek murder charges for suspect

Jerry Fike, 81, died Sunday of injuries sustained in an assault a week earlier. Kevin Turski, 37, was arrested and charged with the assault.

LENAWEE COUNTY, Mich. — A Lenawee County man died Sunday from injuries he sustained in an assault a week earlier, and detectives with the sheriff's office are seeking open murder charges for the man initially arrested and charged with the assault.

Sheriff's deputies found Jerry Fike, 81, lying on the ground outside of his home on Yankee Road in Ogden Township on the morning of May 13 with "serious head injuries" after having been assaulted, according to the Lenawee County Sheriff's Office.

He died Sunday evening from his injuries.

Fike's wife also provided dispatchers with a possible suspect name and description. Deputies and a Michigan State Police trooper eventually found the suspect, 37-year-old Kevin Turski, "walking on the road in the area of the residence," according to a press release from the sheriff's office.

Turski was arrested and charged with felony counts of assault with intent to great bodily harm less than murder and assault with a dangerous weapon.

According to the sheriff's office, Fike's family "knew Turski but he was not welcome at the residence."
