Man accused of kidnapping woman in Detroit, assaulting her in west Toledo

Toledo police say Kevin Thompson II forced a woman into his car in Detroit and brought her back to his west Toledo home where he assaulted her.

TOLEDO, Ohio —

A west Toledo man has been charged with multiple felonies after police say he kidnapped and assaulted a woman.

Kevin Thompson II is accused of kidnapping a woman in Detroit, handcuffing her in his vehicle and assaulting her at his home on Mayfair Boulevard.

"The suspect and the victim are known to each other. This was not random," Lt. Paul Davis with the Toledo Police Department said.

Thompson faces felony kidnapping and rape charges. A judge set his bond at $750,000 on Monday morning.

Toledo police couldn't share how officers were notified – whether it was from the woman herself or by a hospital.

"We're talking about something that is a very traumatic event that happens to someone, to their body," Rachael Gardner, director of victims services with the YWCA.

Regardless of how officials are tipped off, Gardner said reporting sexual assault helps survivors.

"Support is important whether that's through advocacy support, trusted loved ones or even pursuing a criminal justice response," she explained.

Gardner said it's common for victims of sexual assault to know their abuser.

"More common than not, what we see is folks who are assaulted by someone they know, who they trust," Gardner said.

The Rape, Abuse, and Incest National Network (RAINN) reports that 8 out of 10 rapes are committed by someone known by the victim. 39% are committed by an acquaintance and 33% by a partner.

"It is the perpetrator knowing, grooming and gaining trust, and then perpetrating violence against that victim," Gardner said.

The YWCA offers both short and long-term support to survivors of sexual and violent abuse. TPD said the Lucas County Common Pleas Court also has an advocacy program.

"Court proceedings can be very lengthy and probably confusing to people who aren't dealing with the criminal justice on a regular basis," Lt. Davis said. "So that advocate can walk with them through the entire process."

Thompson II does not have a history of violent crime in the Toledo court system. He does have multiple traffic-related charges, like driving under the influence and speeding.

He is due back in court on Tuesday, Oct. 8.
