TOLEDO, Ohio — A man has been arrested and charged for 16 different thefts of packages from Toledoans' porches.
Through collaboration with other northwest Ohio police departments, Toledo police identified Christopher Johnson's vehicle and arrested him during a traffic stop.
TPD said thousands of dollars of stolen items were recovered in the traffic stop and Johnson was charged with three counts of theft. Officers later verified more victims who claimed Johnson stole from them and charged him with 13 more counts of theft.
The spike in porch piracy began in December 2022, police said. Doorbell camera footage was compiled with pictures of the suspect and distinctive damage markings on the suspect's vehicle. The images were then run through the FLOCK database, which compiles license plates through automatic readers on TPD police vehicles and traffic intersections.
TPD said the suspect vehicle, a black Dodge Charger, had temporary tags in the compiled videos. A list of black Dodge Chargers with temporary tags was cross-checked with the FLOCK database and a match was found.
