Toledo records first homicide of 2022

Toledo police found a 58-year-old man shot dead at the intersection of Detroit and Phillips avenues.

TOLEDO, Ohio — Toledo police are investigating after a man was found shot in a vehicle in north Toledo late Saturday night.

Responding to reports of a person who had been shot, police found Ray Gott, 58, in a vehicle at the intersection of Detroit and Phillips avenues at about 10:45 p.m., with at least one gunshot wound. 

Gott was declared dead at the scene.

The death is the city's first homicide of 2022. In 2021 the city experienced a record 70 homicides.

Saturday's killing happened in North Toledo, where police have recently made extra efforts to combat violent crime. Neighbors in Lagrange neighborhood have urged the city to do even more to improve quality of life and drive out crime, including emphasizing economic development and other community investment.

The Saturday-night homicide is the latest in a recent streak of incidents involving shootings in vehicles.

- On Jan. 28 a man was shot in a vehicle in 2300 block of Eastgate Road.

- On Jan. 16 a man was found shot to death in his running vehicle at the intersection of Holland Sylvania Road and Perrysburg Holland Road in Springfield Township.

- On Jan. 1 someone shot into an occupied car in the Old West End. A person was in the vehicle, but was not injured.
