Mother changes plea to no contest in case where children were found in 'inhumane' living conditions in west Toledo

Maryann Baran pleaded no contest to 4 counts of attempt to commit an offense. Her husband is in prison after their children were found in 'inhumane' conditions.

TOLEDO, Ohio — A mother accused of endangering children has pleaded no contest to lesser charges in a case where children were found in what authorities described as "atrocious and inhumane living conditions" in west Toledo.

Maryann Baran, 40, was initially charged with endangering children, a first-degree misdemeanor, and pleaded not guilty on Oct. 1.

She withdrew her previous plea and pleaded no contest to four counts of attempt to commit an offense, a second-degree misdemeanor, on Thursday in Toledo Municipal Court. The amended charges were recommended by the prosecutor for good cause shown, according to court documents.

Her husband, 42-year-old Jason Baran, was sentenced Oct. 29 to 18 months in prison after pleading no contest to three counts of endangering children.

Maryann Baran and Jason Baran, were both charged after Toledo police did a child wellness check at their home on Aug. 31.

A report filed by Toledo police stated that officers found Maryann Baran and Jason Baran's children emaciated and without food, clothes or furniture and covered in mud and feces.

Maryann Baran is scheduled to be sentenced at 9 a.m. on Dec. 17.
